What is Manual Lymph Drainage? MLD MLD is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of slow rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels to increase their work load and enables waste products to be removed and vital substances that help in the defence of the body to be transported more effectively. When was it discovered? It was discovered by Dr Emil Vodder and his Wife Estrid in the early 1930's after noticing that many of the patients that came for massage treatment had enlarged lymph nodes in their neck, which seemed to coincide with symptoms of upper respiratory tract congestion and a poor complexion. Although very little was known about the Lymphatic system in those days, Dr Vodder developed a range of movements and decided to work on the lymph drainage pathways of the face and lymph nodes of the neck, with extremely good results. The symptoms were relieved and health improved. Since then modern research by eminent leaders in the field of Lymphology have shown us how this method effectively influences both the lymphatic and nervous systems. Who can benefit? Post surgery swelling - Varicose veins - Bruising- Torn tendons - Sports injury - Migraine - Chronic headache - Sinusitis - Bronchitis - Hay fever - Skin conditions - acne - eczema - stretch marks - Psoriasis - Whiplash - Stress - Constipation - Fluid retention - Puffy eyes - Painful joints
What happens when I come for treatment? I will ask you for information to complete a consultation chart. This will enable me to decide the appropriate course of treatment for you, and gain your full consent before commencing. Each treatment will start by working on the neck area, with a gentle rhythmic circling movement. It is vital to work proximal to distal so as to clear the pathways above the site of the problem first. This allows affective drainage to take place. I will then work down to and on the problem area. How will I feel afterwards? As MLD is an extremely gentle and rhythmic therapy, most people feel quite sleepy and relaxed. |

What is Reflexology? The ancient art of Reflexology has been known to man for many thousand years. It was first practiced by the early Indian, Chinese and Egyptian peoples. In 1913, Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American ear nose and throat surgeon introduced this therapy to the West. He noted that pressure on specific parts of the body, could have an anaesthetising effect on a related area. In the 1930's Eunice Ingham, a therapist, further developed this theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body. How Can Reflexology Help You? Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing. A reflexologist uses only hands to apply gentle pressure to the feet. Trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet and by working on these points the reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace What happens when I come For Treatment? On your first visit, there is a preliminary talk. I will then begin to work on your feet or hands, noting problem areas. There may be discomfort in some areas but this is only fleeting, and is an indication of congestion or imbalance in the corresponding part of the body. For the most part the sensation is pleasant and soothing, Reflexology will relax you, while stimulating your bodies own healing mechanisms. How Will I Feel Afterwards? After the first treatment or two, your body may respond in a very definite way; you may have a feeling of well-being and relaxation; or you may feel lethargic nauseous and tearful, but this is transitory. It is however vital information for the therapist, as it shows how your body is responding. Combined decongestive therapy This is a specialised treatment incorporating; Manual lymph drainage When is it used? It is used to manage a condition called lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a collection of lymph fluid in the tissues that causes the area affected to become enlarged and fibrous, and the skin to become tight shiny and prone to infection. If left untreated, lymphoedema can result in disease. When does lymphoedema occur? Primary lymphoedema is a congenital condition that occurs due to a malformation of the lymphatic vessels. Secondary lymphoedema can occur as a result of damage or removal of the lymph vessels or nodes. Lymphoedema is a condition, which requires life-long management.
